My Story of growing confidence and finding part-time work, by Sandra Planas

There’s more to me than picking up the toys every day!

I had been a stay at home mum for five years and the fear of returning to work filled with me dread, not just because 'who really wants to go to work’ but since having my daughter, my confidence had plummeted. I had been away from work life for so many years and I felt as though my social skills weren’t up to scratch. My baby brain just couldn’t think of anything adult to say and I wasn’t sure if I could cope with home life, motherhood and a working life too.

When I saw the Successful Mums Back to Work Course, I knew this could be my lifeline.

On the day of the course, I was greeted by the lovely Jane Knight. She was down to earth, instantly likeable and I was put at ease. The ladies on the course were all having the same concerns as me about returning to work.

Jane explained that being a mum meant that I had gained skills and qualities which I hadn’t really thought of before and how being a mum could help me in finding a new job and getting through the interview. We all helped each other with overcoming dilemma situations and I came out of the course feeling confident and believing that I am worth employing. There’s more to me than picking up the toys every day!

Once the course was over, I did have some questions that I had not thought to mention in the session. Thankfully, Jane is still at hand to help you achieve success with your CV and interview techniques through 1 to 1 career coaching.

My daughter said to me the other day “When I get big, I want to be just like you and I want to go to work like you too”. Now that’s something I’ll be encouraging her to do! -

I was now on a mission to look online for a new job. Like thousands of other mums, I wanted part-time hours that fitted around my daughter’s school term-time and to work local.

With my new found confidence, hope and connections from the course, I found that job. I work as an Admin Assistant for three days a week, 9.30am-2.30pm in Bromley for a boss who is happy for me to take time away from work should I need to attend a school play, for example, as long as I work the required hours. So, never say never, there are jobs like this out there.

Life is still hectic but no more than before. Going to work has just fitted in with my normal daily life. Since starting work, my confidence has grown and it’s so nice having colleagues again.

Thank you, Jane for all your encouragement and help. I would recommend this course 100%.
