Networking and Celebrating Successful Mums in 2017

It was cold, it was rainy and I wanted to put my PJs on rather than glam up, but glam up I did and ventured into the blizzard (slight exaggeration). Jane had organised a Networking Event and I have to admit I wasn’t feeling all that ‘networky’ but when I walked in, I was lifted by the amount of enthusiastic and welcoming faces who greeted me. I assumed it was the ‘Christmas Fizz’ which had been promised, but when I sat down and listened I too found myself smiling.

There was a buzz amongst the 30 women sitting round the tables, with pens poised, all eager to learn and share their story. Even me, who usually baulks at the thought of public speaking, was putting my hand up! I recognised a few women from other events Jane had run, and the taster sessions I have attended. I also saw some familiar faces from my Senior School and my own little girls school… which went to prove how this really was a network of local mums. Every one of them a professional with individual talents and experience which would be an asset to any organisation they choose, however these women want more. They want to be their own bosses, decide their own hours, clients and future. It’s incredibly inspiring.

Some of the women I met that night have trained for years in accountancy or graphic design and now can work freelance, or start up on their own. Another, gave up her job in Property Development to turn her hobby of gardening into a career as a Garden Designer. It was great for her to meet other like minded people and gain knowledge from those further down the new business route. Always good to see my friend and Successful Mum Andrea Toms from 'Make Me Local', Jane connected Andrea to this flexible friendly website company, through their Job Board.

I met some great business contacts too, Becky who owns a commercial and domestic cleaning company. I am always on the lookout for good quality cleaning contractors and from talking to Becky, she appears to have ironed out many of the issues I face as an employer of these services. I will definitely be giving her a call.

So from dragging myself out of the house, I skipped home feeling a little a little more inspired and wondering what my career journey might be. I feel so passionately about the message and the motivation Jane and her incredible team give as I am a working mum who has struggled to see my worth in the workplace. I am quite new to this scene but I am so glad it’s now a network I am part of… it’s a little like therapy with Prosecco!
