Jane Knight's Monthly Column - September 2018

Fresh starts and new shoesFresh starts and new shoes

There’s nothing like the end of the school holidays to focus the mind. But once the uniform shopping, new-term pep talks and Facebook photo-ops are over, what’s next for you?

I’ve spent a good part of my career in the classroom and now have two primary-age children, so September has never really lost that “back to school” feeling for me. Even now, I think of it as a month for fresh starts, clean slates and new shoes (any excuse!) – a month that’s brimming with possibilities.

Here at Successful Mums, we’re embracing the spirit of September with a packed schedule of courses and workshops to get you refreshed and ready to go. With the kids off on their new adventures, now’s the perfect time to plan some of your own.

Whether you’re thinking about returning to work or dream of being your own boss, we’d love to help you take your first steps. Our fun and friendly Taster Sessions – packed with advice, confidence tips and job hunting secrets – are returning to Hayes Primary and Ikea’s Purley Way store this month. And, as ever, places are being snapped up fast for our fully funded autumn Back to Work and Business Start-up courses. Follow the links for all the details and start your Successful Mums adventure today.

Our website is bursting with success stories from mums who’ve done just that and they’re a great place to start if you’d like to know more. Fittingly, September’s first story comes courtesy of mum-of-two Jane, who enrolled on our Back to Work course after a 10-year career break and found it the perfect springboard into part-time work in a local school.

In other success news, I’m pleased to announce that our hugely popular Business Start-up course is now an accredited programme. This means that, in addition to giving their businesses the best possible start, our grads walk away with a recognised qualification to enhance their CVs. You can find out more about the course and Diploma here.

Finally, I’d like to say a big thank you for all the lovely messages that came in over the summer on the news of my nomination for a 2018 Forward Ladies Award. I’m incredibly flattered to have been included on the shortlist in the Diversity Champion category for London and The South, and am excited to have the opportunity to showcase Successful Mums on such a fantastic platform for women in business.

Successful Mums sprang from my own experience of struggling to find fulfilling work that would fit around my family life. Four years on, I still love helping mums achieve personal success and am proud of our contribution to the ongoing effort to improve gender equality and diversity in businesses and boardrooms across the UK. Over the coming months, we’ll be bringing more employers into the Successful Mums fold, with events such as our Direct Line Women Returners Day and projects stemming from our recent Returner Survey. We’ll also be helping more mums than ever before make fresh starts. And if that doesn’t justify a new pair of shoes, I don’t know what does!

New Shoes Embrace September and resist turning the heating on just yet…
