Heather Driscoll - From Solicitor to Body Scrubs…
What is the name of your business?
What does your business do?
I make bath and body products using the finest salts, botanicals and essential oils. My current range comprises 5 types of Salt Soaks, 2 Body Scrubs and 4 blends of Bath Tea Bags.
How did Successful Mums help you start your business?
Jane’s One Day Workshops and encouragement provided that “push” I needed to turn my dream into a reality and go ahead and set up the business. The 1 to 1 Coaching continued 1 to 1 support and encouragement has also been invaluable.
What inspired you to start your own business?
I have always wanted to be my own boss but never had the guts – until now – to actually do it!
I trained as a solicitor in Edinburgh and moved to London in 2002. I loved the variety of my job but, after having children, the working hours were just not compatible with family life. With my daughter starting school I made the difficult decision to leave work so I could do the school run and be there for my family. Although it was a hard decision to leave the profession it was definitely the right thing to do at the time and I have no regrets.
I have always had a love of aromatherapy and I have been making my own bath and body products for a while now. Whilst on maternity leave after having my son I started seriously thinking about turning my idea into reality.
What challenges did you have when starting a business?
The main challenge for me was coming up with my brand and developing the right look for it. Another challenge was being patient while all my recipes were undergoing the requisite testing; I had a long 6 week wait before I got the all-clear.
I have loads of ideas for new ranges under my brand – particularly some more male and children-oriented products - so my current challenge is a financial one!
I am hoping to reinvest money from the sales of my current range to develop the new products I have in mind but I am very conscious that this will take time. More patience is required!
What does personal success mean to you?
Personal success for me is enjoying what I am doing and being able to contribute financially to my family.
What is the most challenging thing about working for yourself?
Finding time to work and, then, making sure you work when you have the time is hard.
Routines and being organised does help, I have loads of “To Do Lists” and there is nothing more satisfying than crossing things off each list (even if they are replaced with three or four more items!).
Four mornings a week I have 3 hours to myself when I need to be strict with myself and get things done, this means I can be free to spend time with my children.
I have found that some late nights are inevitable. However, having racked up a lot of late nights in my previous career, and having had two children who didn’t really like to sleep at night, I am used to these and I don’t really mind working into the wee small hours!
What is the most rewarding thing about working for yourself?
I love getting feedback from people who have used my products who have enjoyed using them and who recommend them to others. It makes it all worthwhile!
What top tip do you have for other Mums thinking of starting a business?
Stick with it! It can be tough at the beginning and that everything costs more and takes longer than you think it will but you WILL get there. The most important thing is to enjoy what you do!
