Since the pandemic, Successful Mums Career Academy has seen a significant increase in women over 50 seeking help to return to work. Many lost their jobs during the pandemic, had long career breaks, or are pursuing a career change. Additionally, some mums are facing changes in financial circumstances, such as divorce, separation, or coming out of retirement due to the rising cost of living.
These women are welcome to join any of our accredited courses, which include employability, business start-up, digital and IT, autism awareness, wellbeing, and menopause courses. However, the barriers they face and their needs are subtly different from the younger mums we support. While they may have lost their mojo, we provide tailored solutions focusing on both workplace skills and wellbeing to increase their chances of finding and maintaining suitable employment.
Take digital skills, for example. Many women are apprehensive about technology, but it can be life-changing. For those nervous about learning, we offer a supportive curriculum featuring TED talks and the basics of AI to build confidence. Whether it’s for work or exploring dating websites, we also teach them how to stay safe online.
We all remember dismissing pensions when we were younger, but at midlife, they suddenly become much more important. While we don’t provide financial advice, we do signpost helpful resources and support lines to guide women through identifying their pension pots and connecting with specialists.
Menopause, once a taboo subject, is now becoming a key focus for some employers. We advise mums on managing symptoms, such as using weighted blankets or magnesium tablets, and share helpful podcasts that discuss the challenges and numerous symptoms of menopause. We also offer tips for staying healthy, including the importance of movement, stretching, and the link between physical activity and long-term mental health.
Years ago, turning 50 was seen as the beginning of the end of your career. But now, women are starting new businesses, travelling, and embracing a new chapter of life. This shift comes from positive thinking and surrounding yourself with supportive people. That’s why we encourage our over-50s mums to have role models and mentors at work for ongoing support. Self-care is also essential for maintaining wellbeing.
Some of our mid-life mums include Barbara, 49, who we helped find a flexible role as part of our Working in Schools programme; Cheryl, 62, who attended our Enterprise course to start her beauty business; Ruth, 56, who started her cryotherapy salon with the help of our Enterprise course; Maggie, 62, who makes beautiful jewellery and also did our Enterprise course when she decided to become self-employed; and Danielle, 51, who had one-to-one career coaching to help her find her mid-life mojo and a new flexible career.
