Successful Mums Career Academy Awarded Matrix Accreditation for Excellence in Career Support for the sixth year running!

We’re thrilled to announce that Successful Mums Career Academy (SMCA) has been officially awarded the prestigious Matrix Standard accreditation, a hallmark of excellence for organisations that deliver high-quality Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG).
This national recognition validates our deep commitment to empowering women, especially returning mums, with the career guidance, skills and confidence they need to progress in today’s workforce.
A quality mark that reflects who we are
The Matrix standard, delivered on behalf of the Department for Education, is the gold standard for organisations providing exceptional IAG services. This accreditation acknowledges the dedication, structure and impact of SMCA’s learner-focused approach, where every woman is supported not just as a student but as a whole person with unique strengths, ambitions and circumstances. The report praised our commitment to learner-led support, our empathetic team (including Successful Mums graduates) and our structured yet flexible learning training designed to fit around the realities of being a parent in today’s job market.
Why it matters
Since launching in 2014 with a mission to support just 100 mums, SMCA has helped over 10,000 women through accredited qualifications, career coaching and confidence-building courses. Today, we work closely with over 600 employers to shape more inclusive job roles that reflect the flexibility working mums need and that employers benefit from too.
Our small and experienced team, many of whom are working mums themselves, bring lived experience and passion to every learner engagement. Whether online or face-to-face, our blend of empathy and fun, yet professional service, has made us a trusted career pathway for women from all walks of life.
Working with mums aged 19 to 72, those that have never worked, those that have had director roles and those that face more challenges than most, our mums are a mix of different people at different chapters in their life. Whatever their chapter, we can help.
In the words of one learner from the Matrix interviews:
“I will be forever grateful, they [SCMA] bring us back to life.“
Founder Jane Knight said:
“Achieving the Matrix Standard for the sixth time reflects the heart of what we do, engaging and empowering women with confidence, skills and support they need to thrive in both work and life.”
What makes our support stand out
The Matrix report highlighted a number of key strengths:
- Strong, visionary leadership – SMCA’s founder and leadership team actively shape national conversations around flexible work, career returners and skills development
- Wraparound support – From onboarding to post-course follow-up, learners receive ongoing, personalised guidance that includes career planning, mindset coaching and job interview preparation
- Authentic empathy – Staff ‘walk the walk’, many have balanced work and parenting and even completed the courses they deliver
- High outcomes – In 2022–23, 97% of learners successfully completed their courses, 23% progressed to further learning, and 41% gained employment
- Inclusive and diverse – Our learners come from a wide range of backgrounds, with 50% from ethnic minority groups, 30% single parents and 21% identifying as having a disability
- Community-led growth – Many of our learners discover SMCA through word-of-mouth, our inspiring social media presence or after attending talks by our founder.
Our courses – built for real life
We offer a range of flexible, accredited courses designed around the real-life challenges and ambitions of mums returning to work or changing careers. These include our flagship Back to Work and Confidence programme, Digital Skills, our award-winning Working in Schools course and many others aligned with GLA and DfE priorities.
Each course includes robust IAG, mid- and end-point reviews, personalised learning plans and access to live vacancies via our Padlet and other SMCA platforms.
Our mission continues
The Matrix accreditation reinforces what we already knew: IAG is at the heart of everything we do – and it changes lives.
Whether a mum is navigating childcare barriers, a dip in confidence or planning a return after years away from work, our approach is rooted in intent, impact, clarity and accountability – always on her terms. We track long-term outcomes, offer six months of follow-up support and continue to innovate with tools like JotForms and Padlets to keep the experience relevant and accessible.
Our recent Quality Award and the Mayor of London Adult Learning Award for Inspirational Professionals in Education are further proof that our work is being recognised where it matters most.
We believe every mum deserves the chance to rediscover her confidence, talents and career potential. This accreditation affirms our values and drives us to continue expanding our reach across the UK.
As one of our learners put it best at a Matrix interview:
“Successful Mums is an amazing launch pad – I will take forward the next steps.”
And we’ll be here, cheering her on – and every other mum, every step of the way.
