We have a highly talented team of people at Bromley Homeless, both paid and volunteers – all carrying out extraordinary work and making a real difference to so many lives.  We are now recruiting for a new post within the charity for a Volunteer Coordinator to join our team and coordinate the recruitment, retention and development of our volunteers, providing dedicated support, working with our paid staff and trustees to create capacity and maximise the benefit that comes from a volunteer network to achieve the objectives of the charity.  The Volunteer Coordinator will work closely with our Community Engagement officer to promote volunteering opportunities in the community.  They will also work closely with our hosted accommodation service lead to support in attracting and retaining our volunteer hosts.

We are looking for an individual whose values align with those of Bromley Homeless, who has experience of managing volunteers and possesses the interpersonal skills that enable them to relate and engage with a wide range of people.

Skills Required

The Volunteer Coordinator will work closely as part of our team and will report to the Services Manager to recruit, retain, train and develop volunteers to provide additional resource and capacity in our growing charity. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing plans to improve the management of volunteers within our service.  They will also be responsible for recruiting and supporting our volunteer hosts who give up a room in their home to house a homeless individual (these hosts are paid an agreed weekly rent and utilities contribution and we have a range of incentives available to bring hosts on board).

  • To work with Services Manager and Trustees to identify need for volunteers and prepare volunteer role descriptions
  • Develop and agree safer volunteering policy and implement appropriate procedures
  • Recruit volunteers to fulfil roles, adhering to our safer volunteering recruitment policy
  • Log and maintain volunteer records in our Charity Suite database
  • To attract new hosts, carry out appropriate host taken on checks and risk assessments (process defined by the Services Manager and agreed by Board) and support existing hosts on a regular basis
  • Manage the rota of volunteers for the emergency accommodation night shelter (when this is up and running)
  • To represent and promote Bromley Homeless charity and our volunteering and hosting opportunities across our network, Bromley community and with local churches (this may involve some weekend working including speaking at Sunday church services)
  • Manage the delivery of volunteer training ensuring the all volunteers have the skills needed to carry out their defined roles particularly in relation to safeguarding
  • Manage annual volunteer role reviews and provide feedback on performance against the expectations of the charity for the role
  • Collate volunteer and host feedback and report learnings and proposals to the Trustees to continually improve our volunteer experience
  • Personally adhering to and ensuring that our volunteers also understand and adhere to our relevant policies and procedures, particularly in relation to safeguarding
  • Arrange (where appropriate) volunteer and host thank you events

Bromley Homeless have a vision of a community where everyone has access to a decent home and no one feels their only option is to sleep rough.

Our mission, as an expression of Christian faith, is to provide support and positive intervention to empower anyone facing homelessness principally in the London Borough of Bromley to fulfil their desire for a safe and secure home and live a fulfilled life.

We deliver this mission through a range of services and activities operating year-round. Our strategic priorities have been set as:
1. Provide advice and advocacy to individuals over 18 to overcome a homeless situation
2. Provide timely and personalised support, encouragement and personal empowerment to end homelessness
3. Provide year-round emergency shelter, access to health and wellbeing services and food
4. Provide access to housing through supported housing and hosted accommodation, links with housing providers and private landlords
5. Prevent homelessness and challenge negative attitudes towards it by raising awareness of homelessness and giving a voice to those experiencing it.

The covid pandemic presented some significant challenges for Bromley Homeless and the people we help and support, the government’s Everyone In initiative should have been a positive catalyst to ending rough sleeping for good, however with the cost of living crisis, we are now seeing a significant increase in numbers turning to us for help, support and guidance either individuals who are homeless or are at risk of becoming homeless, increasingly due to the financial and mental health impacts of the pandemic.

We now have the opportunity to develop a year-round shelter utilising a vacancy space above our offices and we hope to finalise the development later this year. This year round service will be volunteer lead and will need a significant pool of volunteer resource to operate. Recruiting, training, managing and developing this network of volunteers will be a key part of the Volunteer Co-ordinator’s role.
