Priya’s story
“Hi, I’m Priya and I work as a teaching assistant at Harris Academy. Recently, I started an amazing journey with the Successful Mums Academy, a training company who support women get back to work. This experience has been incredible, giving me valuable skills and has boosted my confidence.
I’d seen their Working in Schools programme advertised on Facebook and the course caught my eye because it was interested in finding work in the education sector.
The programme is an in-depth six-week training course designed to help you learn about working in a school environment. It covers everything from administrative tasks to classroom management, ensuring that you are well-prepared for the challenges and responsibilities that come with the role.
The key learning modules are:
Classroom Management – we learned effective techniques to maintain a positive learning environment, handle disruptions and engage students.
Educational Technology – this module introduced us to various educational tools and platforms, showing us how to enhance teaching and learning experiences with technology.
Child Development – understanding the stages of child development is crucial – we covered psychological and emotional growth and how to support students effectively.
Communication Skills – we were given training on how to interact positively with students, parents and colleagues.
Special Educational Needs (SEN) – this module taught us how to support students with special needs and the best practices for inclusive education.
A main highlight of the course was the work experience. I got a placement at one of the Harris Academies, which helped me put what I learned into real-life situations. This boosted my confidence and prepared me to tackle the challenges of my new role.
I also loved that we had the opportunity to network with other women on similar journeys. We supported each other, shared experiences and built connections that are lasting long beyond our training. There is a real sense of community and mutual encouragement, that has been invaluable.
The training has given me a new sense of purpose and direction. As I continue my work at Harris Academy, I’m excited to use the skills and strategies I learned during the course. The training has motivated me to be a more effective and supportive teaching assistant and inspired me to look into further opportunities for professional development.
I’m so grateful for this opportunity and look forward to continuing my journey and to keep learning, I really hope I can make a difference in the lives of the students I work with.”
