Relax, It’s only Business

Successful Mum Grad and Ambassador, Jane Altree

What is the name of your business?

Altree Rose

What does your business do?

I support mums from pre-conception through to baby’s first year with reflexology and baby massage.

How did Successful Mums help?

Successful Mums gave me direction as starting out in business can be a daunting and scary prospect. Each week Jane would give you 3 small steps reinforcing the teaching from that week.

Throughout the course Jane entwines self-development. For me this was invaluable having spent a long time out of the work environment. Knowing how to present yourself and regain confidence in your abilities.

The course included 1 to 1 business coaching, which built my confidence in many ways. I felt confident about myself, my service and my pricing structure. Something I had struggled with before.

Jane provided simple advice “stay away from distractions and concentrate on your core business goals.” Simple but very effective advice.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I made the decision not to return to my previous career when my boys were small. When they reached 8 and 10 years of age I knew I was ready for a change in my career path. I wanted to provide my children with a different role model, showing them that anything is possible with hard work. However, like a lot of mums I required a job that would fit around my family life.

I knew the only way to achieve these goals would be to work for myself. Although the prospect of setting up my own business seemed daunting and having no knowledge of business I began to dip my toes into this new world.

What challenges did you meet with upon start up?

Where do I begin? When people talked to me about PR, marketing, social media I would nod and listen politely, inside I would be thinking that doesn’t really apply to me. My train of thought would be that I just need a leaflet and put a few posts on Facebook or maybe join Twitter. I now have a clearer structure of what I need to do for my business needs.

What does personal success mean to you?

For me, personal success means that I have a business, which I love and inspires me. I also get to spend lots of time with my family and have financial security.

What have you found most challenging?

It’s hard working from home. Sometimes having no clear line between work and family time. My husband would say ‘you are always on that computer’ and I would become distracted with the washing or other household chores too easily. As time goes on I have a work and life schedule that I work to.

What is the most rewarding?

When my customers leave my class and say how much they enjoyed it. Recognition from my family. Generating an income doing something I love. My boys making me a cup of tea as we all help out as a family.

What top tip do you have for other Mums thinking of starting a business?

Do it. I was out with some girlfriends recently for dinner and they asked me ‘If you could choose any job in the world what would it be?’ I replied, “I’m already doing it…” It can be hard making that first step, don’t be afraid to use the guidance of a coach, they can make a huge difference.
