A Pretty Success Story for Priti Things Jewellery

What is the name of your business and what does it do?
Priti Things Jewellery. I wholesale sterling silver and gold plated fashionable jewellery to boutiques and shops. I am the sole supplier for my Italian range, ‘stefani argento,’ and also select unique, beautiful, high quality and on trend pieces of jewellery from suppliers around the world. I love to select pieces that keep my customers ahead of the fashion curve.
What inspired you to start your own business?
Before children, I was a criminal lawyer prosecutor which I really loved but, now, I would find it impossible to fit it in with family life, especially school holidays. I wanted to go back to work after 8 years off raising my family but I needed something that would fit in with them: my husband can’t help with childcare due to the nature of his work and I needed something that could work in the school holidays.
My other passion has always been fashion – I am obsessed with fashion! My family has been in the jewellery business for years so thought I’d give it a go. I started selling to a few friends as a hobby and then did a few stalls which did brilliantly – it went from there.

How did Successful Mums help you?
The Successful Mums course was great because I met like-minded women in the same position as me. Jane’s encouragement and positivity really motivated me to go for it. I learnt some amazing tips about business planning and the steps to take.
What challenges did you have when starting a business?
My biggest challenge was time! Fitting in everything I did before and working such long hours around the business was very time consuming – the research took a long time with very little reward. So it can also be a challenge to stay motivated.
What does personal success mean to you?
Personal success would mean working the number of hours to earn enough for the extra little treats in life, while allowing me to spend time with family and friends.
What is the most challenging thing about working for yourself?
Working for yourself is great because you have no one to answer to, you can manage your time to fit your lifestyle and you can unleash your creative side, totally.
But often these things can also be the downsides as you have no one to answer to, you have no one to help make the decisions and you shoulder all the responsibility whether you get it right or wrong. Also not having set hours means you can get carried away – I am often still sat at the laptop in the early hours.
I’ve found that getting things wrong is a good way to learn and when I get things right I literally get that ‘punch the air feeling’!
What top tip do you have for other Mums thinking of starting a business?
I would advise any mum thinking of starting a business to do loads of research and also to have faith in themselves. If you don’t at least try you will never know how you could have done.
